George Lilanga (1934–2005) was a Tanzanian artist. He was of the tribe of the Makonde, lived in Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and was part of the most distinguished representatives of the contemporary African art for many years.
“Inspired by a meeting between Hermès and Jean Pigozzi, a great collector of contemporary African art, the carré Lilanga is the transposition on silk of a canvas by the artist George Lilanga, who came from the high plateau of the frontier between Tanzania and Mozambique, the centre of the Makonde art. Makonde art is full of humour. In this very lively design, brimming with movement, rhythm and colour, the artist conveys a vision of his universe which is nourished by his traditions. His highly expressive art, with its whimsical playfulness, mixes up stylized primitive figures with abstract splashes of colour. He transposes traditional themes into contemporary pictures and modern designs.” (from: Hermes Catalog Spring Summer 2010)
