Design of a courier delivering a letter from Napoleon to Murat in the drawing style of political cartoonist and satirist, Caran d’Ache, the nom de plume of Emmanuel Poire (1858-1909). Born in Moscow to French parents (his grandfather was part of Napoleon's ill-fated Russian campaign), Emmanuel Poiré came to Paris at the age of 20 to join the army. The drawings he made of military life and dress were published under the name Caran d'Ache (Karandash means 'pencil' in Russian). He became one of France's leading cartoonists, and is credited with being one of the inventors of the comic strip.
